Christ Lutheran Church donation

Christ Lutheran Church in Lake Jackson recently donated $831.50, to Live Oak Clinic, an all volunteer clinic for the indigent uninsured, located in Clute. Members of the church sold home-made cookies at their recent Pumpkin Patch to fund this project. Farewell Dr Bertheau

All of us at Live Oak Clinic were saddened by the recent death of Dr. Bertheau. He was one of the first doctors to volunteer his services to the clinic. We will remember his generous spirit, his respect for patients, and his kindness to his fellow volunteers. It was always a treat to see his smiling face. We extend our sincere condolences to all of Dr. Bertheau's family and friends.

A recent item in the Brazosport Facts featured the Junior Service League's Charity Ball to be held October 9th at the Lake Jackson Civic Center. This year's ball is dubbed "Club Ruby" to honor the 40th anniversary of JSL in our community. Proceeds from the event will benefit Live Oak Clinic. Health Care Reform & LOC

Here are some aspects of the Health Care Reform bill that will affect charity clinics.

Medicaid eligibility will expand to all individuals under 65 with incomes at or below 133% of the federal poverty level.

State-based American Health Benefit Exchanges will be created and credits will be available to individuals and families between 133 and 400% of the federal poverty level.

Despite the mandates, expansions to programs, and new incentives for coverage, the CBO estimates that roughly 23 million people will still be without health insurance coverage. Roughly 1/3 of this group will be undocumented immigrants. Roughly 2/3 will be individuals who are exempt from the mandate and cannot afford other options or make too much to qualify for Medicaid. The 2/3 also includes those who will qualify for coverage and will not enroll.

Implementation of most of the legislation will not begin until 2014 and will not be complete until 2019.

Free and charitable clinics will continue to provide health services to those who fall through the cracks and do not have coverage.

Free and charitable clinics will continue to need the support of their community: donations, volunteers and support services.

Diabetes Education

Diabetes can be a difficult disease for our clients to manage on a day-to-day basis.

Two of our volunteer nurses, Shelley & Sandra, have completed training to be facilitators for the Diabetes Conversation Map® program which enables adults to take an active role in their own health education. Our clients with diabetes have expressed a tremendous desire to participate.

At each meeting the nurses use visual tools to engage a small group of diabetic patients in discussions about key topics in diabetes. The sessions focus on participant-directed discussions and shared problem-solving. By participating in the learning, these adults formulate behavior changes needed for better health and diabetes management.

Live Oak Clinic offers two Diabetes Conversation Map sessions a month; one for Spanish speakers & one for English speakers.

Dream Center Open House

The Brazoria County Dream Center will hold its Open House on Monday, March 1st from 4 pm - 7 pm. The Dream Center is a community outreach center dedicated to helping families and individuals in Brazoria County who are experiencing hardships. Live Oak Clinic is housed in the Dream Center.

Brazosport Regional Health System is offering free seasonal flu vaccinations this week. Two clinics will be held. The first is Tuesday, October 20th from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Freeport. The second clinic will be Wednesday, October 21 from 8:30 to 11:30 at Lake Jackson Civic Center.
